The Slow
Weekend Guide

Joshua Tree, California2026

The most radical thing you can do in Joshua Tree is nothing. The desert has a way of making that easier than it sounds — the scale of it, the silence, the particular quality of the light. This guide is for the weekend you actually want to have.

A loose itinerary for a Friday-to-Sunday stay at SaguaroHaus. One short hike. One good dinner out. One afternoon in the cowboy tub. Everything else is optional. The point is to leave feeling like you actually rested.

Friday Evening

Arrive Before Sunset

SaguaroHaus, Joshua Tree

Arrive by 5:30pm for the light

The drive from Los Angeles takes about 2.5 hours. Leave by 3pm to arrive while there's still light. The desert at golden hour — the way the shadows stretch across the boulders, the way the Joshua trees go black against the orange sky — is the first thing that will slow you down. Let it.

Unpack. Don't plan.

The wraparound deck

No schedule required

The first hour at SaguaroHaus is for doing nothing. Put your things down. Walk the deck. Sit in a chair outside and watch the sky change. The instinct to immediately plan the weekend is the thing you came here to escape. Resist it for at least one hour.

Dinner at the House

SaguaroHaus kitchen

Stater Bros. is 15 min — stock up on arrival

The first night is for cooking. The kitchen is fully equipped — a GE Café double gas range, Vitamix, full cookware, and a pantry with the basics. Stop at Stater Bros. in Twentynine Palms on the way in. Make something simple. Eat outside. The fire pit can go after.

Saturday Morning

Coffee on the Deck

The teak deck

The best cup of the weekend

The GE Café espresso setup is stocked and ready. Make coffee before you do anything else. The morning light in the desert is different from anywhere else — flat and clear and very quiet. Drink your coffee in it. This is the whole point.

Crossroads Café

61715 Twentynine Palms Hwy, Joshua Tree

Opens 7am · 10 min from SaguaroHaus

If you want to go out for breakfast, Crossroads is the move. A Joshua Tree institution — the breakfast burrito is the thing to order. The patio fills up fast on weekends. Arrive by 8:30am or expect a wait. Worth it either way.

One Short Hike

Hidden Valley Trailhead, Joshua Tree National Park

1 mile · Easy · 20 min from SaguaroHaus

The Hidden Valley Loop is one mile. It takes 30–45 minutes at a slow pace. The trail winds through a natural rock enclosure — granite boulders the size of buildings, Joshua trees growing from the cracks. It's the right amount of hiking for a slow weekend. Don't do more than this in the morning.

Saturday Afternoon

The Cowboy Tub

SaguaroHaus

Heat time: ~45 min

The outdoor soaking tub at SaguaroHaus is the best place to spend a Saturday afternoon. Heat it up, get in, look at the sky. The desert is quiet in the afternoon. The heat is dry. The combination of hot water and open air and nothing to do is the definition of a slow weekend.

Noah Purifoy Museum

63030 Blair Ln, Joshua Tree

Free · 5 min walk from SaguaroHaus

Seven acres of large-scale sculpture assembled from found objects by artist Noah Purifoy over the last 15 years of his life. Free admission, open dawn to dusk, walking distance from SaguaroHaus. Spend an hour here in the afternoon light. It will change the way you see the desert.

Integratron Sound Bath

2477 Belfield Blvd, Landers

Book at integratron.com · 20 min from SaguaroHaus

A 45-minute sound bath in an all-quartz acoustic dome built in 1954. The resonance of the crystal bowls in that space is genuinely unlike anything else. Book weeks in advance — they sell out. If you can get a session, make it Saturday afternoon.

Saturday Evening

Pappy & Harriet's

53688 Pioneertown Rd, Pioneertown

Open Thu–Sun · 30 min from SaguaroHaus

The legendary Pioneertown roadhouse. BBQ, cold beer, and live music most weekends. The drive through the desert at dusk is part of the experience. Arrive by 6pm for a table. Stay for the music. Drive back under the stars.

Fire Pit Under the Stars

SaguaroHaus fire pit

Best on new moon nights

If you'd rather stay in, the fire pit is the best option. The sky at SaguaroHaus is dark enough to see the Milky Way from May through October. Build a fire, pour something good, and look up. The Geminids in December and the Perseids in August are worth planning around.

Sunday

A Long Breakfast

La Copine, 848 Old Woman Springs Rd, Flamingo Heights

Reservations required · Opens 10am

Sunday is for eating slowly. La Copine in Flamingo Heights does weekend brunch — seasonal, precise, and worth the 20-minute drive. Or make something at the house: the kitchen is fully equipped and the morning light through the kitchen windows is its own reward.

Cap Rock at Golden Hour

Cap Rock Trailhead, Joshua Tree National Park

1.6 miles · Easy · Best 2 hours before sunset

If you do one more thing in the park before leaving, make it Cap Rock at the end of the day. A 1.6-mile loop around one of the park's most iconic formations. The late afternoon light turns the granite amber. It's a good last image to carry home.

Leave Late

SaguaroHaus

Check-out 11am · LA is 2.5 hrs

Check-out is at 11am, but the drive back to Los Angeles is only 2.5 hours. There's no reason to rush. If you can, stay through the morning. Have one more coffee on the deck. The desert is different on Sunday — quieter, slower, more itself.

What to Bring

The Essentials

Pack before you leave

Stater Bros. in Twentynine Palms for last-minute supplies

Groceries for at least two meals (the kitchen is the point). A good book or two. Sunscreen and a wide-brim hat. Layers for the evenings — desert nights are cold even in summer. A red-light headlamp if you want to stargaze properly. And nothing you don't need.
