Noah Purifoy Outdoor Desert Art Museum

Open dawn to dusk, free
Ten acres of large-scale assemblage sculpture built from the debris of the 1965 Watts Riots. Purifoy lived and worked here from 1989 until his death in 2004. There is nothing else like it in California. The work is raw, political, and deeply beautiful. Go in the morning when the light is low and the shadows are long. Free admission.
Pioneertown

Built in 1946 as a permanent Western film set by a group of investors that included Roy Rogers and Gene Autry. The main street — Mane Street — is still intact, and the buildings are still in use. The architecture is a kind of accidental vernacular design. Walk it slowly.

A gallery and community space in the heart of Joshua Tree that has been championing desert artists for over a decade. Now operated by a Los Angeles-based non-profit, the space continues its mission as a hub for local and emerging artists. The World Famous Crochet Museum is next door. Housed in a former photo booth, this is one of the most photographed structures in the desert. The collection is exactly what it sounds like. It is also, somehow, a serious piece of folk art. The building itself is the exhibit.

The oldest continuously operating gallery in the high desert, founded in 1957. The collection spans generations of artists who have been drawn to the Mojave. A useful counterpoint to the newer commercial galleries.

Built by George Van Tassel between 1954 and 1978 using sacred geometry, ley lines, and instructions he claimed to have received from extraterrestrials. The result is a 38-foot diameter, two-story, non-metallic structure with extraordinary acoustics. The sound baths held inside are genuinely transformative. Book weeks in advance.

Self-guided drive
Drive slowly through this residential area east of Joshua Tree and you'll find some of the most interesting vernacular architecture in the desert — owner-built structures from the 1960s and 70s that predate the design tourism wave. The best ones are off the main roads.

The best all-around shop in downtown Joshua Tree — a general store in the original sense. Lifestyle apparel, vintage clothing, handmade apothecary, ceramics, books, and locally made sundries. The backyard extends the shop into the open air. A second location in Twentynine Palms carries more inventory.

Second Saturday, 5–9pm
On the second Saturday of every month, galleries across Joshua Tree and Yucca Valley open late and coordinate programming. This is the best single evening to see the most work and meet the artists. The energy is unlike anything else in the desert.
