Ryan Mountain
Ryan Mountain Trailhead, Park Blvd

The best summit hike in the park. 1,000 feet of elevation gain over 1.5 miles — steep but manageable. The 360° view from the top takes in four mountain ranges: the San Bernardinos, San Jacintos, Pinto Mountains, and the Coachella Valley. Start early; the exposed trail gets hot by 10am.
Lost Horse Mine Trail

A 4-mile round trip to a well-preserved gold mine from the 1890s. The trail climbs gradually through classic Joshua Tree terrain — granite boulders, yucca, and the namesake trees. The mine itself is fenced for safety but the views from the ridge above it are worth the extra 10 minutes.
Cholla Cactus Garden
Pinto Basin Rd, near Twentynine Palms entrance
0.25 mile loop · Easy · Best at sunset
A short walk through a dense grove of jumping cholla cactus — one of the most visually striking spots in the park. The light at golden hour turns the spines into a halo of gold. Bring a telephoto lens. Do not touch anything.

Noah Purifoy Outdoor Desert Art Museum

Seven acres of large-scale sculpture assembled from found objects and debris by artist Noah Purifoy over the last 15 years of his life. One of the most significant outdoor art installations in the American West. Free admission, open dawn to dusk. Walking distance from SaguaroHaus.
Pioneertown
Pioneertown, CA
30 min from SaguaroHaus
A movie set town built in 1946 by Roy Rogers and Gene Autry as a permanent Western backdrop. The main street (Mane St.) is still largely intact. Pappy & Harriet's anchors the social life. Walk the street, have a drink, and stay for live music if the timing is right.

A one-of-a-kind acoustic chamber built in 1954 by UFO contactee George Van Tassel. The all-quartz dome produces extraordinary acoustics. Sound baths are held regularly — 45 minutes of crystal bowl resonance that is genuinely unlike anything else. Book weeks in advance; they sell out.
Pioneertown Mountains Preserve
Pipes Canyon Rd, Pioneertown

Over 25,000 acres of protected wilderness adjacent to Pioneertown. The Pipes Canyon Trail is the highlight — a 6-mile out-and-back through a riparian canyon with cottonwoods, willows, and occasional bighorn sheep sightings. Far less crowded than the national park.

The closest swimming and water sports to Joshua Tree — about 75 minutes west. Kayaking, paddleboarding, and swimming in a reservoir surrounded by granite boulders. A good option for a mid-trip change of scenery.
Salton Sea
Salton Sea State Recreation Area

An acquired taste, but worth the detour for the surreal landscape. California's largest lake sits 226 feet below sea level in the Sonoran Desert. The abandoned marinas, the salt-encrusted shoreline, and the complete absence of other tourists make it one of the strangest places in the American West.

Best on new moon nights · May–October for Milky Way
The park is an International Dark Sky Park (Silver Tier). The best in-park stargazing spots are Skull Rock, Jumbo Rocks Campground, and the Cholla Cactus Garden. But the deck and fire pit at SaguaroHaus are just as good — and you don't have to drive back in the dark.
